In the past many web content management systems (WCMS) were beyond the scope of most small businesses and were used on large websites with a dynamic collection of web materials. Not anymore. Many WCMS systems today allow a normal internet user to create, control, edit, and maintain content. It allows users with little knowledge of programming language to create and manage content with relative ease. Most CMS editors are comparable to today’s most popular word processors. They rely on a database to store their data. Although it requires a high level of knowledge to create and setup a content management system and database, the options are unlimited with what you can do. Information from the database can always be exported or copied so that in the future, your information is readily available for whatever application you have. Most WCMS’s will require an experienced coder like Otreva to setup and add new features, but they can be easily maintained by a non-technical user.

WordPress started back in 2003 and is becoming arguably the most popular CMS system available on the web. WordPress offers an amazing community that provides help, documentation, widgets, plugins and much more for its’ users. Joomla!

Joomla! is another popular CMS system widely available to internet users. It is a complete system allowing everything from simple to advanced sites. With over 5,200 extensions available at the time of this writing and support of an entire community, the possibilities available with Joomla! are almost limitless. The downside it the heavy list of extensions (at least the good ones) often require purchase and some customization to get them to do what you want.

SilverStripe

SilverStripe is the third CMS system Otreva Designs uses for our web development endeavors. The program is written on top of PHP and was designed with an emphasis on flexibility. We prefer to use this for out of the box projects or content heavy sites. It was built on top of its own PHP framework entitled Sapphire. One of the unique options of SilverStripe is that users are welcome to customize their administrator back-ends. With great SEO (Search Engine Optimization) support and content version control, SilverStripe is a great alternative the other popular CMS systems.
